What Is a Transit QR Code and Why You Need One
A transit QR code is a digital barcode generated by your phone that replaces every physical ticket, transport card, and coin you would otherwise need to ride China's public transport. You simply:
- Open your payment app
- Display the QR code
- Scan it at the turnstile or bus door
- Ride
- Scan again when you exit (metro only)
- The fare is automatically deducted from your linked payment method
Why this matters for international travelers: China's metro stations often have ticket machines that only accept Chinese currency, run out of coins, or require Chinese-language input. Transport cards require a deposit and a trip to a service counter. The transit QR code eliminates all of these problems — you just need your phone.
Even better: You do not need a Chinese bank account. Both Alipay and WeChat Pay now accept international credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Discover). You link your card once, and every transit ride is charged directly to it.
Option A: Alipay Transit QR Code Setup (Step-by-Step)
Step 1: Install and Set Up Alipay
- Download Alipay from the App Store or Google Play
- Open the app and tap Sign Up
- Enter your phone number (international numbers work — select your country code)
- Verify with the SMS code
- Set a password
Step 2: Link Your International Credit Card
- Go to Me → Bank Cards
- Tap Add a Bank Card
- Enter your international Visa/Mastercard/AMEX number
- Verify with your bank's confirmation (SMS or app approval)
- Your card is now linked — you can see it under "Bank Cards"
Important: Alipay may charge a small verification amount (¥0.01–1) that is refunded immediately. This confirms your card is active.
Step 3: Activate the Transit QR Code
- On the Alipay home screen, tap the "Transport" (出行) icon
- If you don't see it, tap "More" → search for "出行码" or "Transport Code"
- Select your city — type "Guangzhou" or "Shenzhen" (or any other Chinese city)
- The app will display a QR code on screen
- This QR code is your transit pass — it updates automatically every 60 seconds for security
Step 4: Ride the Metro
- Approach the turnstile
- Open Alipay → tap "Transport" → your QR code appears
- Hold your phone screen over the scanner (located at the top of the turnstile)
- The turnstile opens — walk through
- Ride the metro to your destination
- At the exit turnstile, display the QR code again and scan
- The fare is calculated and deducted automatically
Fare calculation: The system calculates your fare based on the distance between your entry and exit stations. You see the charge amount in your Alipay transaction history within seconds.
Option B: WeChat Pay Transit QR Code Setup (Step-by-Step)
Step 1: Install and Set Up WeChat
- Download WeChat from the App Store or Google Play
- Sign up with your phone number (international numbers work)
- Verify with the SMS code
Step 2: Link Your International Credit Card
- Go to Me → Services → Wallet
- Tap Add a Card under "Bank Cards"
- Enter your international credit card number
- Verify with your bank's confirmation
- Your card is linked and ready
Step 3: Activate the Transit QR Code
- Go to Me → Services → Transport (出行服务)
- Or search "乘车码" in the WeChat search bar
- Select your city (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, etc.)
- Agree to the service terms
- Your transit QR code appears on screen
Step 4: Ride the Metro
Same process as Alipay — scan at entry, scan at exit, fare deducted automatically.
How to Scan at the Turnstile
The scanning process is the same for both Alipay and WeChat Pay:
- Open the transit QR code screen on your phone
- Position your phone face-down over the scanner at the top of the turnstile
- Keep the phone 2–5 cm from the scanner
- Wait for the beep and the turnstile to open
- Walk through promptly — the gate closes in 3–5 seconds
Common scanning mistakes:
- ❌ Holding the phone too far away (>10 cm) — the scanner cannot read the code
- ❌ Moving the phone while scanning — hold it steady for 1–2 seconds
- ❌ Having a screen protector that blocks the scanner — very rare, but try removing it if scanning fails
- ❌ Using a cracked screen — the QR code may not display correctly
- ❌ Letting the QR code expire — it refreshes every 60 seconds, so if you wait too long, tap "Refresh"
Pro tip: Keep your phone brightness at maximum when scanning. The scanner reads better with a bright screen.
Which Cities Support Transit QR Codes
Transit QR codes work in over 300 Chinese cities, including every major tourist destination:
| City | Metro | Bus | Ferry | App Support |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guangzhou | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | Alipay + WeChat |
| Shenzhen | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | Alipay + WeChat |
| Beijing | ✅ | ✅ | — | Alipay + WeChat |
| Shanghai | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | Alipay + WeChat |
| Chengdu | ✅ | ✅ | — | Alipay + WeChat |
| Hangzhou | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | Alipay + WeChat |
| Kunming | ✅ | ✅ | — | Alipay + WeChat |
| Nanjing | ✅ | ✅ | — | Alipay + WeChat |
| Wuhan | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | Alipay + WeChat |
| Xi'an | ✅ | ✅ | — | Alipay + WeChat |
| Chongqing | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | Alipay + WeChat |
| Suzhou | ✅ | ✅ | — | Alipay + WeChat |
| Foshan | ✅ | ✅ | — | Alipay + WeChat |
| Dongguan | — | ✅ | — | Alipay + WeChat |
Note: You need to select the correct city in your app before scanning. The QR code is city-specific — a Guangzhou transit code will not work on a Shenzhen turnstile. If you are traveling between cities, switch the city setting in your app.
Common Problems and Solutions
Problem 1: "QR code not recognized" at the turnstile
Solution: Increase screen brightness to maximum. Hold the phone closer (2–5 cm). Make sure you selected the correct city in the app. Try refreshing the QR code.
Problem 2: "Insufficient balance" error
Solution: This happens if your linked credit card has been declined. Check that your card is still active and has available credit. Try adding a backup card in your payment app settings.
Problem 3: Forgot to scan at exit
Solution: If you exit without scanning, the system will charge you the maximum fare for that line (typically ¥10–15). This is not a penalty — it is just the system's default when it cannot calculate your actual distance. To avoid this, always scan at exit.
Problem 4: Phone battery dies mid-ride
Solution: If your phone dies between entry and exit, go to the station service counter. They can look up your entry record and charge you the correct fare manually. Bring your passport for identification.
Problem 5: "City not supported" message
Solution: Some smaller cities may not yet support transit QR codes. In this case, buy a single-journey ticket from the ticket machine or purchase a local transport card at the service counter.
Transit QR Code vs. Transport Card vs. Single Ticket — Comparison
| Factor | Transit QR Code | Transport Card | Single Ticket |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setup time | 2 minutes | 5–10 minutes | 1–2 minutes |
| Deposit required | None | ¥20–30 | None |
| Refund process | None | Must return card for deposit refund | None |
| Works across cities | Yes (switch city in app) | No (city-specific) | No |
| Requires phone | Yes | No | No |
| Requires Chinese bank | No (international cards) | No (cash top-up) | No (cash only) |
| Transfer discounts | Yes (automatic) | Yes | No |
| Risk of loss | Low (on your phone) | Medium (physical card) | None (single use) |
Recommendation: Use the transit QR code as your primary method. Carry a transport card as backup in case your phone battery dies.
Bonus: Using Transit QR Codes for Buses and Ferries
Buses
The same transit QR code works on buses in supported cities. The process is even simpler:
- Open your transit QR code
- Scan it at the scanner near the bus driver (usually on the fare box)
- A beep confirms payment
- No exit scan needed — bus fares are flat-rate (typically ¥2)
Note: Bus fares are flat regardless of distance, so you only scan once when boarding.
Ferries
In cities with ferry services (Guangzhou, Shanghai, Wuhan, Chongqing), the transit QR code works at ferry terminals:
- Scan at the boarding gate
- Fare is deducted automatically
- No exit scan needed for most routes
Guangzhou Pearl River ferry: The night cruise ferry from Shamian Island to Canton Tower accepts transit QR codes. Fare: ¥2 for regular service, ¥80–120 for tourist night cruise (separate ticket required).
