The Journey

Every April and May, the coast of Pingtan Island glows an ethereal blue after dark — a bioluminescent phenomenon known as "Blue Tears" that has become one of China's most mesmerizing natural spectacles. This route pairs that otherworldly night with the human-made wonders of the Maritime Silk Road: Gulangyu Island, Quanzhou's UNESCO-listed trading ports, and Fujian's legendary cuisine.

DAY1

Arrival — Xiamen

Arrive at Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport. Check in to Andaz Xiamen or Xiamen Seaview Resort. Afternoon: Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street (century-old arcade architecture) → Lujiang night cruise. Dinner: 1980 Shao Rou Zong on Zhongshan Road (Minnan-style savory zongzi + shacha noodles). Taiwan compatriots: enjoy 7-day free city transit + hotel discounts with "First Visit Service Package."

DAY2

Xiamen Cultural Day

Morning: Nanputuo Temple (1,000-year-old monastery) → Xiamen University (Jiageng architecture, advance booking required). Lunch: Shapowei Art District seafood stalls (near Xiamen U West Gate). Afternoon: Gulangyu Island (UNESCO World Heritage, 20-min ferry). Highlights: Shuzhuang Garden (Japanese-style garden + piano museum), Sunlight Rock (panoramic island views). Ferry booking: reserve 7 days in advance on official platform. Evening: return to Xiamen, seafood stalls at ferry terminal.

DAY3

Xiamen → Pingtan Island

Morning high-speed rail Xiamen North → Pingtan (~1.5 hrs) or drive (~3 hrs). Check in to Beigang Village "Stones That Sing" B&B (seaside stone-house boutique, bookable on Booking/Ctrip). Lunch: Beigang Village seafood stall (seasonal catch). Afternoon: Pingtan North Route island tour — Xianren Well (sea-carved wonder) → Donghai Xianjing ("Fairy Well" sea cave) → Northern Ecological Corridor. Evening: head to Changjiang'ao Windmill Field (one of the best Blue Tears observation points).

DAY4

Pingtan Blue Tears Night

Blue Tears formation conditions: water temp 18–24°C, south wind, no moonlight. Best viewing: 20:00–02:00. Top observation points: Changjiang'ao Windmill Field (classic: blue tears + windmills framed together), Tannan Bay (beach-type, family-friendly), Beigang Village beach (convenient, fewer tourists), Longwangtou Bathing Beach (closest to downtown). Daytime: Tannan Bay beach relaxation → Pingtan Taiwan Duty-Free Market → Haitan Ancient City. Overnight in Pingtan.

DAY5

Pingtan → Quanzhou (Maritime Silk Road Origin)

Drive to Quanzhou (~2.5 hrs) or Pingtan HSR → Fuzhou South → Quanzhou. Quanzhou: UNESCO "World Maritime Trade Center of Song-Yuan China" (2021 World Heritage). Morning: Kaiyuan Temple (1,300-year-old monastery, mulberry trees, Indian-style stone pillars) → Qingjing Mosque (one of China's oldest). Lunch: Quanzhou West Street (mianxianhu rice noodle soup, runbingcai spring rolls, ginger duck). Afternoon: Quanzhou Maritime Museum (Silk Road artifacts, Song-Yuan ceramics, Arab merchant relics). Evening departure from Quanzhou Jinjiang International Airport. 240h visa-free extension: continue to Fuzhou (1 hr by train) → Wuyishan (UNESCO dual heritage site).
