The Journey

Follow the ancient Silk Road through the Hexi Corridor — from Lanzhou's Yellow River banks to Dunhuang's Mogao Caves, the world's greatest treasury of Buddhist art. This route traces 2,000 years of cultural exchange, where Chinese, Indian, Persian, and Central Asian civilizations met and merged. Every stop is a UNESCO moment.

DAY1

Arrival — Lanzhou

Arrive at Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport, transfer to downtown (70 km, 1.5 hrs). Check in to Hampton by Hilton or similar. Afternoon: Yellow River Mother Statue → Zhongshan Bridge (First Bridge over the Yellow River) → Baitashan Park for panoramic river views. Dinner at Zhengning Road Night Market — Lanzhou beef noodles, lamb skewers, sweet fermented barley.

DAY2

Lanzhou → Ta'er Monastery → Qinghai Lake

Drive to Ta'er Monastery (250 km, 3.5 hrs) — one of the six great Gelugpa monasteries. Famous for butter sculptures, pile embroidery, murals, and sandalwood carvings. English guided tour available. Continue to Qinghai Lake (150 km, 2.5 hrs). Sunset walk by the lake. Note: Altitude ~3,200 m; avoid strenuous activity on first day.

DAY3

Qinghai Lake Sunrise → Chaka Salt Lake

Pre-dawn: Heimahe sunrise over Qinghai Lake (depart 5:30). Morning: drive to Chaka Salt Lake (150 km, 2 hrs) — China's "Mirror of the Sky." Ride the small train into the heart of the salt flats for surreal reflections. Afternoon: return to Xining (300 km, 4 hrs). Overnight in Xining.

DAY4

Xining → Zhangye via Qilian Mountains

Scenic drive along the Qilian Mountain grassland corridor to Zhangye (450 km, 6 hrs). Highlights: Daban Mountain viewpoint, Qilian grasslands (rapeseed flowers in July–August), Gangshika Snow Peak. Evening arrival in Zhangye. Local dinner: Zhangye-style sao noodles and chao bula.

DAY5

Zhangye Danxia Landform — Full Day

Zhangye Danxia National Geopark — one of the world's top 10 geographical wonders. Route: West Gate → Seven-Color Cloud Sea Terrace → Seven-Color Brocade Terrace → Hongxia Terrace → North Gate (best sunset viewpoint). Afternoon/evening: Zhangye night market cultural experience.

DAY6

Zhangye → Jiayuguan

Drive to Jiayuguan (230 km, 3 hrs). Afternoon: Jiayuguan Fort — the westernmost pass of the Ming Great Wall. Optional: Overhanging Wall section. Focus: Great Wall defense systems and ancient military communications. Overnight at Jiayuguan Plaza Holiday Inn or similar (4-star).

DAY7

Jiayuguan → Dunhuang

Drive to Dunhuang (380 km, 5 hrs), traversing the Hexi Corridor. Check in to Dunhuang Sun Hotel or Dunhuang Shanzhuang. Evening: Mingsha Mountain & Crescent Lake — sunset camel ride and sand sliding. Night: Shazhou Night Market (donkey meat noodles, Li Guang dried apricots). Note: large temperature drop after desert sunset — bring a jacket.

DAY8

Mogao Caves — Full Day

Book 15–30 days in advance (longer in peak season). Standard ticket: 8 caves (Category A with professional guide). Special cave ticket (advance booking): access caves 45/57/96/148. Best experience: first session at 8:00 for optimal lighting. Afternoon: Dunhuang Academy Exhibition Center (digital displays complement cave visits). Overnight in Dunhuang.

DAY9

Dunhuang Western Route

Full-day western route: Yangguan Pass ("West of Yangguan, no old friends") → Yumen Pass (Han Great Wall frontier) → Yadan National Geopark ("Devil's City," sunset scenic bus tour). Chartered car or group tour recommended with English-speaking driver-guide. Return to Dunhuang (250 km round trip, ~6 hrs). Overnight in Dunhuang.

DAY10

Departure

Morning departure from Dunhuang Mogao International Airport, or train to Lanzhou/Xi'an to continue. 240h visa-free travelers: consider flying to the next city (Jiayuguan → Xi'an flight saves time).
