We do the moderate version (3-4 hours, not the full 2-day trek). Some uphill sections but well-paved trail. If you have knee issues, we can skip the gorge and add extra time in Shangri-La instead.
Lijiang 2,400m (1 night), Shangri-La 3,200m (2 nights), Tiger Leaping Gorge 1,800m. We arrange proper acclimatization. Avoid alcohol and intense exercise on your first day in Shangri-La.
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is weather-dependent. We check the forecast and choose the clearest day for the cable car. Even if the summit is cloudy, Blue Moon Valley (below the mountain) is stunning year-round with turquoise water.
Layered clothing (T-shirt + fleece + light down), sunscreen (high UV at altitude), sunglasses, comfortable hiking shoes, and a daypack. We provide walking sticks for the gorge hike and oxygen canister as backup.
Daytime: 15-20°C (sunny and pleasant). Nighttime: 5-10°C (bring a jacket). In winter (Dec-Feb), it can drop below 0°C at night. Hotels have heating, but pack a warm layer for evening walks.
“Our guide Xiao Yang was exceptional. She translated Bai dialect for us, explained the tie-dye symbols, and even arranged a surprise sunset tea session on a rooftop overlooking the old town.”
“Erhai Lake cycling was the happiest afternoon of our trip. Our guide took us to a hidden spot away from the crowds. The views of Cangshan mountain reflecting on the water — photos can't capture it.”
“Lijiang's Square Street at dusk is absolutely magical. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain was worth every step. But the Bai tie-dye workshop in Zhoucheng was the highlight — my 8-year-old daughter made her own scarf.”
“The Bai family lunch in Xizhou was the most authentic meal I've had in China. Grandma made her famous 'Baba' flatbread right in front of us. Culture tastes this good.”
“The Changsha bathhouse was incredible — unlimited food, movies, and spa. Then Zhangjiajie took my breath away. The 'forest oxygen bath' under Avatar peaks is something I'll never forget.”
Northwest Yunnan is the crown jewel of China travel. Book early —high season fills fast.
